The season for Atka mackerel is said to be from July to December, from summer to winter. Atka mackerel is said to be especially delicious during this time because it eats abundant food, grows large, and stores nutrients.
Atka mackerel is famous as one of Hokkaido’s biggest producing areas, and is unique in that it is caught in different locations throughout the year, somewhere along the Hokkaido coast. In particular, Rausu, Rebun, and Shakotan are famous for their special production. Atka mackerel approaches the coast in search of food in the spring and spawning in the fall. Therefore, the peak fishing season is from May to July and around November.
There are also two types of Atka hockey: True Atka” andShima Atka”. True Atka mackerel is light and has a strong flavor, while Shima Atka mackerel is thick and fatty. Eating both when they are in season allows you to enjoy their deliciousness to the fullest.
