A sushi boom has arrived in Italy as well.
Although it lags far behind other countries, sushi has been very popular in Italy for several years.
However, Italian sushi is still developing.
“Is Italian sushi delicious?”
“I think I’ll try some sushi when I go to Italy.”
For those who are thinking about this, I would like to introduce the situation of sushi in Italy.
Characteristics of Italian sushi restaurants
general store
Nowadays, sushi restaurants can be found all over Italy, not just in big cities like Milan and Rome.
What is common in Italian sushi restaurants is
ALL YOU CAN EAT!
all you can eat! is. (English for some reason.)
The average store pricing is
Lunch is around 10-15 euros
Dinner costs around 20-25 euros
(Drinks are an additional charge.)
Is tea free at a sushi restaurant?
No, it’s not.
There is a charge for water as well as tea. If you don’t order it, it won’t come out.
Well, it’s Italy, so it can’t be helped.
Who is the manager?
90% of sushi restaurants in Italy are run by Chinese people.
The all-you-can-eat restaurant I mentioned earlier is run by a Chinese person.
The remaining 10% are run by Italians.
There are also a few Japanese-run restaurants in places like Milan and Rome, but of course they don’t offer all-you-can-eat options, and the prices are extremely high.
I’m sure it’s delicious. I’d like to try it someday. . .
What’s the taste?
Unfortunately, I have yet to eat sushi at a restaurant run by a Japanese person.
So far, I’ve been to four Chinese restaurants (two “all you can eat” restaurants, two non-“all you can eat” restaurants), and two restaurants with Italian owners.
I say it clearly.
ALL YOU CAN EAT (all you can eat) restaurants are not delicious.
Most of the sushi restaurants in Italy are “all you can eat” restaurants, so here’s what an all you can eat restaurant is like. . .
Even though it is called “all you can eat,” it is not a buffet style, but rather a system where you choose from a menu and order.
Also, there are often no time limits.
In addition to sushi and sashimi, the menu also includes Chinese dishes.
As for my impressions, the sashimi wasn’t fresh, the sushi rice was too soft, and the fried food was oily.
I asked if the Chinese food would be good, but it was not good. (Chinese food in Italy is famous for not being delicious.)
When I ordered miso soup, I was surprised to find that it had neither the scent of dashi nor the taste of miso.
The Italian sitting next to me was drinking it with a spoon and seemed to enjoy it, so I asked him for it.
My body and clothes were oily when I got home, probably because a lot of oil is used in fried foods and Chinese food.
[Conclusion]
It’s better to avoid all-you-can-eat restaurants.
Even at restaurants run by Italians and Chinese restaurants, the taste was so-so at restaurants that didn’t offer ALL YOU CAN EAT.
However, it is very delicious! It’s not at that level though.
Types of sashimi
When you walk into an Italian sushi restaurant, you’ll notice that there are only three types of sashimi.
salmon
Tuna (tonno)
Sea bass (branzino)
There are three types.
Some restaurants have sweet shrimp, but these are basically the only types of fish available.
And unfortunately, the freshness is not so good.
For those who know Japanese sashimi, the taste is not very satisfying.
Roll sushi is popular
In Italy, sushi rolls such as Uramaki” andCalifornia Roll” are popular.
I don’t see many people eating nigiri sushi.
Sashimi isn’t very tasty, so I’d rather have sushi rolls than nigiri.
in conclusion
Did you find the information about sushi in Italy helpful?
If you’re traveling and are always wondering, “What does Italian sushi taste like?”, you might want to give it a try.
However, I don’t really recommend it.
In particular, I think it’s best to avoid ALL YOU CAN EAT restaurants.
Even in such a restaurant, there are always a lot of customers, and everyone is happy to eat and say “It’s delicious!” But are Italian people okay? I’m worried.
Even if you’ve never eaten sushi, you can probably tell if the fish is fresh and if it’s delicious. I think so.
If you are traveling to Italy, be sure to enjoy Italian cuisine while you are there!
Delicious sushi will be waiting for you when you return to Japan.
